Providenciales is where the country's tourist industry has boomed. With little in the way of cultural life or historical interest, for decades only a handful of visitors made their way here, attracted particularly by the superb opportunities for diving and fishing in the offshore waters. Tourism began to heat up in the 1980s with the arrival of Club Med , and rocketed through the 1990s as investors spotted the great potential for resorts. The opening of Beaches in the late 1990s (part of the enormously successful Sandals resort chain) put Provo on the map as far as large-scale tourism was concerned, but it remains an easy-going getaway nonetheless.

There's no town to speak of on the island. Downtown, as the business centre is known, is a rather ugly group of shops and offices that you'll pass through on your way from the airport. The three original settlements (which can loosely be described as villages) are little visited by tourists: Blue Hills , a pretty residential area that runs alongside the sea north of the airport; Five Cays , a drab collection of homes and shops on the south of the island; a similar cluster around the Beaches resort known as The Bight.

For many visitors, particularly those staying at the all-inclusive on the north coast, the only sightseeing worth venturing out for is a wander along the six miles of magnificent beach on Grace Bay . It's a spectacular stroll beside a turquoise sea, with occasional shade beneath the casuarina trees, and however large the crowd outside the hotels, you'll invariably find a deserted spot to pitch camp.

More adventurous visitors will want to take advantage of the boat trips that run to the Caicos Cays from Leeward Marina, where you can spot rock iguanas, hunt for sand dollars and make a picnic on a deserted island.
