Despite the government's best efforts, major development continues to elude the small but delightful island of Grand Turk. Frustrating as this is to the powers that be - who see their young people emigrating to Providenciales or abroad for jobs - those who make the effort to get here will find a charming and unspoiled island.

A series of expansive, muddy-colored Salinas dominate the centre of the island, testament to the salt trade that first brought development to Grand Turk. West of here and running beside the sea, Front Street has much of the country's finest colonial-era architecture as well as the tiny but superb National Museum , while the diving and fishing are world-class and the beaches magnificent. Consider renting a car or scooter for a day to tour the island, which will only take you a few hours to explore, or ask a taxi driver for a guided tour.
