Of the good
beaches that line the west and east coasts, the pick of them is
Governor's Beach, where the powdery sands shelve into a turquoise sea. To
get there head south on the road from Cockburn Town, ignoring the turn-off to
the airport, and continuing towards the Governor's residence, known as
Waterloo.
Just before you reach the imposing white walls, turn off to the right along a
track that runs past the small nine-hole golf course in the grounds of the house
(call 649/946 2308 to book a round for US$25). At the end of the track take the
path through the bush to a superb stretch of white sand, backed by casuarinas
trees and fronting onto a magnificent turquoise bay. Be sure to take water, as
there are no facilities on the beach and you're likely to have it to yourself.
