Tucked away
in the wilds of Leeward east of the marina, the Caicos Conch Farm, on
Leeward Highway (Mon-Sat 9am-4pm; $6, $3 for children), is the only one of its
kind in the world. Started in 1984, the farm is responsible for rearing queen
conch - a giant sea snail, famous for its gorgeous pink shells and pearls - for
export and for sale in the islands.
Conch - pronounced konk - are subject to numerous predators
in the sea, including sharks, stingrays, porcupine fish and octopus.
At the farm they are protected, first in large hatcheries and then,
as they grow towards adulthood at three to five years, in pens at
sea.
Twenty-minute tours of the farm are given frequently - if you
arrive mid-tour you can still join in; the guide will fill you in
afterwards on the parts you missed.
