One of the main draws in Middle Caicos is a series of limestone caves at Conch Bar. Formed over millennia by the action of water on the soft rock, the extensive network was once the home to Lucayan Indians, almost certainly here at the time of Columbus, and various of their artifacts - including tools and pottery - have been removed to the National Museum in Grand Turk. Tours of the caves need to be arranged in advance, either through a tour company in Provo or by booking a tour with one of the Middle Caicos taxi drivers. Try Earnest Forbes on 649/946-6140.

If you are here on a tour, you'll probably spend some time at Mudjin Harbour , a short drive east of the caves. It's a dramatic setting with tall cliffs dropping down to the sea, a rocky promontory just offshore and waves often crashing onto a yellow-sand beach. As you go down to the beach there's a short trail off to the left that leads to the top of the cliff where you'll have fantastic views down the coast and across the scrubby, undeveloped interior of the island.

East of here the road leads to the small settlement of Bambarra where there is a large and very quiet white-sand beach framed by casuarinas trees; at low tide you can wade out along a sandbank for half a mile to the delightful beach at Pelican Cay.

Continuing further east, Lorimers - named for a local plantation owner - is one of the most remote settlements in the country, though there's little here of for visitors.

The high point in the island's calendar is Middle Caicos Expo , a great weekend party in August during which former residents return and others flood in to hear live bands and hang out at the beer tents set up on Bambarra beach.
